The Missing Tourist tells the story of Atsumi Yoshikubo, a 45-year-old Japanese doctor, who mysteriously vanished in the Canadian wilderness.

On October 17, 2014, Atsumi Yoshikubo traveled to Canada’s remote Northwest Territories from Japan with the hope of seeing the Aurora Borealis. Five days after she arrived, she went walking along the main road heading out of town and was never seen again. Tracing Yoshikubo’s journey from a small prefecture in southern Japan to the wilderness of the Northwest Territories, The Missing Tourist breaks down cultural boundaries to investigate one of the most unsettling mysteries in the history of the Canadian North.

“It’s excellent… a truly intriguing story. It is steeped in what seems the contemporary true crime narrative. Yet it asks, in a philosophical way, was there a crime at all?”

— John Doyle, The Globe and Mail (February 27, 2017)
